“The Importance of Raising Up Latina Women for Political Leadership Roles” webinar was presented in partnership with ReflectUS as a part of their 19th Amendment Centennial Speaker Series. ReflectUS is a national, nonpartisan coalition of leading women’s representation organizations working to increase the number of women elected and appointed to public office at the local, state, and national levels.
Throughout the webinar, we address the underrepresentation of Latinas in political office and discuss ways in which Latinas can overcome the challenges that keep them from running for office. We also have a conversation with the ever-inspiring Aura Vasquez, the first Afro-Latina immigrant to run for the Los Angeles City Council, who talks about her reasons for running and provides advice for women thinking about getting involved in politics. Before running for office, Aura served as a former Commissioner at the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, where she gave residents a voice by being the first commissioner to host office hours.
